Abstract

Spousal battering is a covert societal phenomenon that has garnered widespread attention in recent times. It is prevalent among couples and is considered one of the most common types of domestic abuse. This study investigated the association between personality disorder and domestic violence among secondary school teachers in Kwara state, Nigeria. The study employed a descriptive survey research design with a correlational approach. The study specifically targeted a cohort of 4,581 instructors. A stratified sampling technique was utilised to select 300 teachers from 4 local government areas in Kwara state. One research question and a corresponding null hypothesis were investigated. The data collection instruments comprise two tailored questionnaires: the Spousal Battery Experience Scale (SBES) and the Personality Disorder Scale (PDS). The instrument's reliability was evaluated using Cronbach Alpha, yielding coefficients of 0.79 and 0.83. The data were analysed utilising methods such as frequency count, mean, percentages, and standard deviation. In addition, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to evaluate the null hypothesis with a significance threshold of 0.05. The survey results revealed that 56.0% (139) of secondary school teachers in Kwara state possess a notably limited level of familiarity with marital abuse. Further investigation revealed a correlation between personality disorder and domestic violence among secondary school teachers in Kwara State. The study revealed that personality disorder is a significant predictor of spousal battery. Counsellors should increase their efforts in offering counselling services before during, and after marriage by organising workshops or seminars and promoting public knowledge and understanding of the laws that ban domestic violence among secondary school teachers.
