ASSESSMENT OF HEALTHFUL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AMONG PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN SABON GARI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract


This study assessed the healthful school environment among public secondary schools in Sabon Gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The population for this study comprised all 10 public secondary schools in Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The sample size of 165 was selected using multistage sampling procedures of purposive and simple random sampling. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire developed by the researchers. The reliability of the instrument was done using a test re-test method with a reliability coefficient of 0.755. The research question was answered using descriptive analysis of frequency, mean and percentage and inferential statistics of one-sampled t-test was used to test the stated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the study revealed that 66.1% of the schools studied have adequate sanitary facilities, there was availability of clean water in 72.1% of the schools, 50% of the schools had adequate toilet facilities and 29.7% of the schools show a conducive learning environment. The findings further revealed that the healthful school environment of secondary schools in Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State, Nigeria was significant (t = 27.182.; p = 0.000). Based on the findings, the study concluded that the majority of public schools in Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State had a healthy learning environment. Based on the conclusion, the study recommended the need for public schools to ensure the renovation of outdated structures and the installation of extra classrooms. Furthermore, clean water sources should be made available to schools that do not have an appropriate water supply.
