PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL CLIMATE AS CORRELATE OF STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN ILORIN METROPOLIS
Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate public secondary school climate as a correlate of
students’ academic achievement in Ilorin Metropolis. The study adopted a descriptive survey of
the correlational type. The population consists of all teachers and principals of all existing
secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis. A total of 375 respondents were used for the study.
Multi-stage sampling technique was used for the study. Simple random sampling technique was
used to select 25 public secondary schools in Ilorin Metropolis. Purposive sampling technique
was used to select 14 teachers and one principal from each school. The sample of the study was
therefore 350 teachers and 25 principals, totalling 375 respondents. Public Secondary School
Climate Questionnaire (PSSCQ) and Students’ Academic Achievement Proforma were used for
data collection. Four research hypotheses were formulated and tested using inferential statistics
of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Statistic at 0.05 level of significance. Findings showed
that there was a significant relationship between public secondary school climate and students’
academic achievement in Ilorin Metropolis. There was a significant relationship between opened
public secondary school climate and students’ academic achievement in Ilorin Metropolis. There
was a significant relationship between autonomous public secondary school climate and
students’ academic achievement in Ilorin Metropolis. However, there was no significant
relationship between closed public secondary school climate and students’ academic
achievement in Ilorin Metropolis. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that
government should ensure that public secondary schools are provided with the necessary
educational needs and facilities in a good and conducive atmosphere so that teaching and
learning activities would improve students’ academic achievement in Ilorin Metropolis.
