SCHOOL RESOURCES AND PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MAIDUGURI METROPOLITAN AREA, BORNO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study examined school resources and public primary school pupil’s academic performance in Maiduguri 
Metropolitan Area, Borno State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of this study were to determine the relationship 
between availability of instructional materials, adequacy of instructional materials, availability of infrastructural 
facilities, adequacy infrastructural facilities and pupil’s academic performance in public primary schools in 
Maiduguri Metropolitan Area, Borno State, Nigeria. Four (4) hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.5 level of 
significance. Correlational research design was adopted for this study, stratified random sampling technique was 
used to select a sample of twenty-eight (28) public primary Schools out of the population of forty-two (42) public 
primary Schools in Maiduguri Metropolitan Area. Self-structured checklist titled "School Resources Checklist” 
(SRC) and profoma were used for data collection. The checklist was in line with the minimum standard for basic 
education in Nigeria. Frequency, percentage and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient (r) were used to 
analyse the data. Findings of the study revealed that there is a moderate negative correlation between school 
resources and pupil’s academic performance. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations 
were made: State Government should prioritize the equitable distribution of essential infrastructural facilities across 
public primary schools, School administrators should actively engage with the local community and stakeholders to 
mobilize additional resources and support for educational initiatives.
