HARMONIZING TRADITION AND MODERNITY: STRATEGIES FOR INTEGRATING TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND MODERN TECHNOLOGIES IN THE IDOMA TRIBE OF BENUE STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study explored the strategies for integrating traditional knowledge and modern technologies to maintain ethnic 
identity and harmonize change in Nigeria. A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining both 
qualitative and quantitative Approach. Quantitative data was collected and analyzed with a questionnaire designed 
and validated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient (α = 0.87), ensuring reliability. A questionnaire was designed and 
administered to 150 respondents. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data. 
The qualitative data involved in-depth interviews with 10 discussants, purposively selected from 5 ethnic groups in 
Nigeria. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The study focused on the Idoma tribe in Benue 
State, Nigeria, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and traditional systems, such as cultural festivals, rituals, 
traditional governance, leadership, community, and hospitality, which offer valuable insights into sustainable 
practices among the Idoma people. By integrating these traditional practices with modern technologies, the research 
aimed to demonstrate successful examples of innovation that respect and preserve ethnic diversity. The findings 
showed how cross-disciplinary approaches could achieve a harmonious balance between preserving cultural heritage 
and embracing technological advancements, ultimately contributing to the socio-economic development and 
environmental sustainability of Sub-Saharan Africa. The study also provided policy recommendations and practical 
strategies to guide future efforts in fostering inclusive and responsible innovation in the region.
