Abstract

AI has revolutionised the “what” and the “how” of education with novel educational tools designed for learning purpose. These advances have radically altered what is learnt and how it is being learnt. The imports of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) defined the aim of this study which was to assess the level of awareness and usage of chatbots among teacher trainees in Ogun state using survey research design. The research questions were to know the level of awareness about chatbots and the level of usage of chatbots among teacher trainees while also asking if there was correlation between awareness and usage of chatbots among teacher trainees alongside testing for four hypotheses. A mix of quantitative and qualitative research methods were adopted to analyse data collected through e-questionnaire. Data was described qualitatively as well as analysed quantitatively using T-test, Pearson product moment correlation and ANOVA method. The study found that there was a high level of awareness and usage among teacher trainees and the data showed a correlation between awareness and usage. The hypotheses tested also revealed that awareness and usage were not skewed by respondents’ gender or disciplines. We therefore concluded that teacher trainees are conscious of technological advancement in the education sector and we recommended that stakeholders should proactively provide policy framework for effective integration of AI in education as well as intentionally adopt, regulate and promote Chatbot Mediated Learning (CML) for more fluidity in the content and the process of education in an age of data.
